LG Fashion Week started away from the tents at King West but at the AGO with Vawk by Sunny Fong. His collection, Tatto Hibiscus, was inspired by his trip to Bora Bora after winning Project Runway Canada earlier this year. We saw leather in smooth golden sand, floral transparent cut outs in the poppy punches of flowing Polynesian dresses and models of every shape and age.
Notable then headed over to Holt Renfrew for the opening media cocktail hour. Seven Canadian labels were highlighted by Holt Renfrew; Denis Gagnon, Greta Constantine, Jeremy Laing, Lida Baday, Mikhael Kale, Pink Tartan and Smythe showed a few looks from their collections. Members of the media socialised and chat over wine and fruit tarts about the whirlwind week to come.
Back at the tents for the opening speeches on the runway, Robin Kay thanked the fashion industry and title sponsors, LG and L’Oreal Paris, for their continued support. “You are all Wear Love” – this year’s theme. For the first time, the Fashion Design Council of Canada’s Designer Development fund was awarded to Lucian Matis by Lisa Tant from Flare magazine.
On the runway, L’Oreal Paris showed 100 years of beauty with models representing every decade of fashion, make up and hair. Sponsor, the Stratford Festival, with “Fashion Meets Festival meets Fashion” inspired Canadian designers to bring their past productions into runway looks.
